Climate Watch BSCL joins SCO network

Bangladesh has secured a position in the global space-based climate monitoring network as Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) has been recognised as a Signatory of Space for Climate Observatory (SCO) and appointed as the country’s National Focal Point (NFP).

This development is expected to enhance the Bangladesh’s climate resilience efforts by expanding opportunities for international cooperation, access to satellite-based data, and the use of advanced climate monitoring technologies.

According to official sources, the BSCL has been formally designated by the SCO as Bangladesh’s representative organisation for coordinating climate monitoring initiatives under that global platform.

In the meantime, the recognition marks a significant milestone for the country’s space technology development and climate action initiatives, as Bangladesh becomes part of the international alliance led by the French space agency, the Centre National d’Études Spatiales (CNES).

Following approval from the Posts and Telecommunications Division, the BSCL submitted its Expression of Interest (EoI) to the SCO on December 8, 2025. Later-on, based on a decision by the SCO Steering Committee, the organisation officially recognised Bangladesh as a Signatory and designated BSCL as the country’s NFP. 

The BSCL disclosed the development in a press release issued on Monday.

Established in 2019 at the initiative of the French government, the SCO is an international alliance of space agencies, research institutions, and universities. It supports monitoring the local impacts of climate change, developing forecasting tools, and promoting evidence-based decision-making through the integration of satellite and in-situ data.

Bangladesh is already implementing an SCO-funded project, BanD-SOS, which aims to provide real-time storm surge forecasts during cyclones and develop flood risk maps to improve disaster preparedness and response.

BSCL MD and CEO Dr Emadul Rahman said, “Becoming a member of the Space for Climate Observatory and being recognised as Bangladesh’s National Focal Point is a prestigious international achievement for the country. This is not only a milestone for BSCL but also a significant advancement for the country’s space and climate diplomacy.”

“The recognition will create new opportunities for international research collaboration, technology exchange, capacity building, and the wider use of satellite-based climate information,” he said.

He added, “We believe this achievement will further strengthen our capacity to address climate change challenges and contribute to building a sustainable and climate-resilient future for the next generation.”

An official signature ceremony is expected to take place during a designated session of the Space Summit in Paris, France, on September 9, 2026, according to the BSCL chief.
