Michigan health authorities have confirmed the first two US deaths linked to a Cyclospora infection, marking the country’s first reported fatalities from the foodborne parasite.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said both victims had serious underlying health conditions and died after developing severe intestinal illness and dehydration. Their identities were not disclosed.

Health officials are investigating the source of the outbreak, with lettuce imported from Mexico identified as the leading suspected source. The lettuce was reportedly served at Taco Bell outlets in five US states, while investigators continue to examine other possible sources.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that commonly causes prolonged watery diarrhoea, nausea and stomach cramps. Although infections occur every year, particularly during late spring and summer, deaths from the disease are extremely rare.

The CDC reported 6,707 laboratory-confirmed cases nationwide as of July 28. Michigan authorities said more than 190 people linked to the outbreak have been hospitalised.
