Public health risk at administrative hub: UNO announces initiative for permanent solution

A persistent waterlogging problem at the Kendua Upazila Parishad premises has been causing serious inconvenience to service seekers and government officials, while raising concerns over public health and sanitation. The newly appointed Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and administrator of Kendua Municipality, Ms. Sanjida Chowdhury, has said that a municipal project has been undertaken to find a permanent solution to the problem.
Kendua Upazila, comprising one municipality and 13 unions, relies heavily on the Upazila Parishad as a major administrative centre and a key point for accessing government services. Hundreds of people visit the premises every day for various official purposes.
However, upon entering the Upazila Parishad compound, stagnant and dirty water can be seen in several places. The areas in front of the Upazila Agriculture Office, Statistics Office, UNO's Office, Primary Education Office and Rural Poverty Alleviation Office are reportedly among the worst affected.
Local residents said the absence of an effective drainage system causes waterlogging even after light rainfall. As the water remains stagnant for long periods, foul odours and increased mosquito and fly infestations have made movement difficult for both visitors and government employees.
People visiting the Upazila Parishad, including Abul Kashem, Jiton Mia, Selim Mia and Haider Ali, said they often have to walk through dirty water to reach government offices.
“Coming to the Upazila Parishad for official work and having to wade through dirty water is extremely unpleasant. Such an environment in front of important government offices is really disappointing,” they said.
The prolonged accumulation of stagnant water has also raised public health concerns. Local people fear that stagnant water could create breeding grounds for mosquitoes and increase the risk of various water- and vector-borne diseases.
The situation has also raised questions about the overall cleanliness, environmental management and aesthetic condition of the important administrative premises.
Speaking on Sunday (August 9), newly appointed Kendua UNO and Kendua Municipality Administrator Ms. Sanjida Chowdhury said she had prioritised the issue shortly after taking charge.
“I have taken the issue of waterlogging at the Upazila Parishad premises seriously since joining. A project has already been taken up by the municipality to address the problem. I hope the waterlogging will be eliminated once the project is implemented,” she said.
Conscious citizens have called for more than temporary removal of stagnant water. They urged the authorities to establish a permanent drainage system, improve water outlets, ensure regular cleaning and take effective measures to control mosquitoes.
They expressed hope that the proposed project would be implemented quickly and that the Upazila Parishad premises would eventually become a clean, hygienic, public-friendly and visually appealing administrative area.
The key question now is how quickly the project will be implemented and when the Upazila Parishad premises will finally be freed from stagnant dirty water and the resulting public suffering.
