NY, NJ declare Aug 15 as India Independence Day

The state administrations of New York and New Jersey in the US announced that they will celebrate August 15 as 'India Independence Day'.
A report published by Firstpost said, a statement issued by the New York state government confirmed the decision. New York Governor Kathy Hochul will attend the official event organized to mark the day, the statement added.
New Jersey state administration made a similar announcement in a separate statement. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherill will attend the event in New Jersey as the chief guest.
New York and New Jersey are neighboring states with large immigrant populations. A significant portion of these residents are Indian Americans.
Officials from both states said the decision honors India's independence from British colonial rule.
Declarations issued by both states highlighted that India’s freedom movement and its emphasis on peaceful resistance inspired civil rights movements worldwide.
The statements also recognized the contributions of Indian immigrants across key sectors, including the economy, public safety, and healthcare in both states.
The Consulate General of India in New York welcomed the move and thanked both state governments.
The Indian consulate stated that the recognition reflects the long-standing alliance, diplomacy, and shared values between India and the United States.
