F-16 jet crashes in Turkey's Yalova; pilot unharmed

A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed during a routine training exercise in northwestern Turkey on Wednesday, but the pilot ejected safely and survived without injury.

The incident occurred in the province of Yalova, located southeast of Istanbul along the Sea of Marmara.

"An F-16 aircraft belonging to our air force was involved in an accident during a training flight in Yalova, and our pilot survived by ejecting," Turkiye’s Defense Ministry said in an official statement, promising a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.

Footage broadcast by local media showed a plume of thick black smoke rising from a field near the crash site. CCTV footage carried by the IHA news agency showed the aircraft flying at a very low altitude before disappearing behind trees, followed by a cloud of smoke.

According to private news channel NTV, the plane crashed near an air base. Rescuers were dispatched to the scene, and the pilot was transported to a hospital for medical evaluation.

The incident follows a crash six months ago when another Turkish F-16 jet crashed near the Bulgarian border shortly after takeoff, killing the pilot. In November, Turkey also grounded its C-130 cargo fleet after a fatal crash in Georgia.
