Nolan’s 'The Odyssey' breaks box office records, hits $1.1B

Christopher Nolan secured another massive box-office victory with his recent epic adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek classic, ‘The Odyssey.’

The big-budget feature grossed $1.1 billion globally, overtaking ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ to become the highest-grossing film of Nolan’s career.

The film also set a new record as IMAX’s highest-grossing release of all time with $289 million in ticket sales, surpassing James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ (2009).

Surpassing the billion-dollar mark, ‘The Odyssey’ stands as the second biggest film of the year behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the second highest-grossing R-rated release in history behind 2024’s ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Wolverine.’

By comparison, Nolan’s previous release and Best Picture winner, ‘Oppenheimer’ (2023), grossed $975 million worldwide.

The box-office run for The Odyssey remains strong, having earned $461 million domestically and $643 million internationally for a $1.1 billion total before its scheduled release in China on August 14.

Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, Universal’s president of international distribution, credited Nolan’s global appeal for the successful revival of the world-famous mythic poem.

Starring Matt Damon as the Greek king Odysseus, ‘The Odyssey’ holds distinction as the first feature film shot entirely using IMAX cameras. The ensemble cast includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Lupita Nyong’o.
