Govt to set up disability schools across country

The government plans to establish a school for children with disabilities in every district and upazila, Social Welfare Minister Prof Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said on Sunday.

He said 85 such schools are currently operating. The government also plans to increase specially trained teachers to ensure quality education for children with special needs.

The minister made the remarks at an event in Eskaton organised by the Bangladesh National Social Welfare Council to provide special grants to students with disabilities and disadvantaged meritorious students.

He said the government is also working to create employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for people with disabilities and income opportunities for their parents.

Social Welfare Secretary Dr Mohammad Abu Yusuf said social safety-net allowances and the number of beneficiaries have increased.
