Teacher remanded over madrasa student’s death

A Dhaka court on Thursday placed a madrasa teacher on a three-day remand in a case filed over the death of a 13-year-old student whose body was recovered from a bathroom at a madrasa in Rayerbagh.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam granted the remand to Hafez Mohammad Zakaria, 35, for questioning. Another accused teacher, Hafez Mohammad Zubayer Ahmed, 20, claimed to be a minor, so the court did not hear the remand plea against him and set August 18 for the hearing.

Prosecution Sub-Inspector Abdus Sabur confirmed the matter.

On August 3, the body of Mohammad Naim Sheikh was recovered from a third-floor bathroom of the madrasa in the Jorakhamba area. His mother, Nazma Begum, later filed a case against the two teachers, who were arrested from the madrasa that night.

The case alleges that the two teachers had repeatedly tortured Naim for various reasons. His mother had wanted to take him out of the madrasa after he complained to her, but the accused allegedly refused to issue his release certificate.

According to the case statement, Naim told the teachers on August 3 that he did not want to continue studying there. He was allegedly beaten and later strangled to death.

The investigating officer had sought five days’ remand for both accused. After hearing the arguments, the court granted Zakaria three days’ remand, while the hearing against Zubayer was deferred.
