Gas shortage leaves workers jobless

According to Mohammad Hatim, who is the president of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), the association has been working on resolving the crisis with Titas Gas for a week now. He threatened that there may be a press release on Monday if things don’t change for better.

Approximately 450 dyeing factories in Narayanganj have stopped their operations. There is an impact on more than 100 garment factories as well. The gas pressure in Savar and Ashulia has decreased significantly, with about 4,000 workers having lost their jobs already.

In Habiganj, there has been a stoppage of gas supply to 171 factories, leaving behind approximately 200,000 workers out of work. Many other factories in Gazipur are affected by the gas crisis, and one spinning mill in Narsingdi has suspended its operations for 1,200 workers.

Almost all of the 33 CNG filling stations in Narayanganj have been forced to shut down operations as there has been a major decrease in gas pressure.

This gas shortage has resulted due to the decreased amount of gas supply to the national grid following a technical problem at the floating LNG terminal in Maheshkhali.
