7,000 Indian yaba tablets seized at Phulbari border

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel seized 7,000 Indian yaba tablets during an anti-smuggling operation in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram on Friday night. The suspected smuggler, however, managed to flee into India after abandoning the consignment upon sensing the presence of BGB members.

According to BGB sources, acting on a tip-off, a patrol team from Gangarhat Border Outpost conducted a special operation in the Bidyabaghis area of Phulbari upazila on Friday night. During the operation, the patrol team spotted a man entering Bangladesh from the Indian side of the border. When the BGB members challenged and chased him, he abandoned a sack he was carrying and fled across the border into India.

The BGB team later searched the abandoned sack and recovered 7,000 Indian yaba tablets, which had been specially packed and concealed among grass. The seizure value of the yaba was estimated at Tk 21 lakh, according to the BGB.

Lt Col Mehedi Imam, PSC, commanding officer of Lalmonirhat-15 BGB Battalion, said efforts were underway to identify those involved in the drug-smuggling network and take legal action against them.

He said BGB remains committed to ensuring national sovereignty and border security. Any attempt at smuggling, drug trafficking, illegal entry or push-ins would be firmly resisted, while intelligence surveillance and patrols in border areas had been strengthened. Such operations would continue in the future, he added.
