Bangladesh aims to leave 250 million trees in Chattogram in five years: State Minister

State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam has said the government aims to leave behind 250 million trees in Chattogram within the next five years as part of its efforts to protect forests and maintain environmental balance.

The state minister made the remarks on Saturday afternoon while visiting the Hazarikhil Wildlife Sanctuary in Fatikchhari, Chattogram. During the visit, he highlighted various government initiatives on forest conservation, afforestation and environmental protection.

“Some 2.355 million trees have already been planted in Chattogram. Instructions have been given regarding tree planting in Fatikchhari and Hathazari. We want to leave behind 250 million trees in Chattogram after five years,” he said.

Emphasising the protection of forestland and its recovery from illegal occupation, Sheikh Faridul said no activity that harms the environment would be tolerated.

He said eviction drives were also being conducted in areas where the Forest Department was working to recover illegally occupied land.

“Deforestation and tree smuggling are major threats to the environment and biodiversity. Those concerned need to play a more effective role in stopping such activities,” he said, stressing the need to increase tree plantation alongside forest conservation.

The state minister also expressed sorrow over the recent loss of lives in a shipyard accident, describing shipyards as a high-risk industry.

“Deaths at shipyards are tragic. Those operating such establishments must be more responsible. This can help us prevent such accidents to some extent,” he said.

Chattogram-2 (Fatikchhari) lawmaker Sarwar Alamgir, Fatikchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Saeed Muhammad Ibrahim, the divisional forest officer and officials from different levels of the Forest Department were present during the visit.
