Bangladeshi actress Jaya Ahsan has drawn attention after joining a rally in Kolkata demanding greater safety for women.
She took part in the rally on the eve of India’s Independence Day, along with politicians, legislators, members of the Bengali film and music industries and members of the public.
The programme was organised at the call of West Bengal minister Agnimitra Pal. Jaya was seen chanting slogans and joining others in singing the song “Karar Oi Louho Kopat”.
Photos and videos from the rally have since circulated on social media, prompting both criticism and praise. Some questioned why a Bangladeshi citizen took part in a programme in Kolkata, while others praised her participation in a campaign for women’s safety.
Jaya has not publicly commented on her participation or responded to the reactions on social media.
Meanwhile, she remains busy with acting projects. Her latest Indian film, ‘Aajo Ardhangini’, was recently released in cinemas and has received a positive response from audiences.
