A terrifying rise in dengue cases has hit the Khulna division, resulting in four deaths over the past five days.
One patient succumbed to the virus at Khulna Medical College Hospital in the last 24 hours while three other fatalities were recorded in the last five days. Total death toll from dengue in the division has now reached 14 this year, with Khulna district leading the board with 13 deaths.
Meanwhile, 135 new patients were admitted to various hospitals across the division in the last 24 hours. Rapid influx of affected has created severe pressure on the medical facilities. Many patients are moving here and there in search of hospital beds.
According to the Khulna Divisional Health Directorate, 113 of the new patients were admitted to government hospitals, while 22 entered private facilities.
Khulna district recorded the highest number of new admissions at 53. Out of these, 27 patients were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Bagerhat reported 24 new cases, Jhenaidah 8, Satkhira 5, Kushtia 4, and Magura and Meherpur registered 2 cases each.
Since January 1, a total of 3,690 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals across the division. Among them, 3,162 patients have recovered and received clearance. Currently, 476 patients are receiving treatment in various hospitals, while 38 critically ill patients were referred elsewhere.
Division Health Director Dr. Sheikh Md. Moshharraf Hossain confirmed the death tally. He noted that 11 of the 13 deaths in Khulna district occurred at Khulna Medical College Hospital alone. One death was reported in Bagerhat.
Khulna City Corporation statistics highlight a worrying scenario in the city. Wards 28, 22, 29, and 30 have been classified as "Red Zones" due to high infection rates. Wards 17, 18, 23, 24, and 27 are marked as moderate-risk "Orange Zones," while remaining wards fall under "Yellow Zones."
Khulna City Corporation Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju stated that leaves for all officers and staff have been cancelled to manage the outbreak. Fogging, hand spraying, and mobile court operations are ongoing to destroy mosquito breeding grounds. Health authorities urge residents to eliminate stagnant water and remain vigilant.
