Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain refunded Tk 200 to a patient who was asked to buy saline from outside despite supplies being available at Naogaon 250-bed General Hospital.
The minister made the refund during a surprise inspection of the hospital on Sunday morning.
He visited different wards, the operating theatre, pharmacy and kitchen, and spoke to patients during the inspection, expressing dissatisfaction over several issues.
The minister reprimanded a nurse for asking a patient to buy saline from outside despite it being available in stock. He then returned the Tk 200 the patient had spent on the saline.
After inspecting the hospital for about an hour, Sakhawat went to the superintendent’s office and called absent doctors on their mobile phones to seek explanations. He said the inspection found several irregularities, including the absence of a doctor.
“The hospital authorities have been warned about these issues,” the minister said.
He said the government had taken various initiatives to ensure healthcare services for people at the grassroots, and facilities, including beds, would be increased at upazila health complexes very soon.
Naogaon-5 MP and hospital management committee chairman Zahidul Islam Dhalu, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam, hospital superintendent Dr AM Akhtaruzzaman, Civil Surgeon Dr Md Aminul Islam and Additional Superintendent of Police Joybrata Pal were present.
