Prime Minister’s Political Assistant Rashed Khan has said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will nominate a single candidate in the upcoming local government elections and no party member will be allowed to contest as a rebel candidate against the party’s decision.

He made the remarks at an exchange meeting with government officials, heads of educational institutions, freedom fighters, journalists, businesspeople and labour leaders at the Kaliganj Upazila Parishad auditorium in Jhenaidah on Sunday afternoon.

Rashed Khan said, “If you are a member of the BNP, you must follow the decisions of the party’s central command. A single candidate will be nominated in the upcoming local government elections. No one from the party will be allowed to contest as a rebel candidate.”

Emphasising the need to make public services easier and free from harassment, he said action would be taken after investigation if any government official was found to have behaved improperly or demanded bribes while providing services. He instructed the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) to install complaint boxes at the entrances of all government offices in the upazila. However, he warned that action would also be taken against anyone filing false complaints out of personal enmity or rivalry.

He further said there would be no conflict with the opposition Jamaat regarding development in the area. He called on people from all political backgrounds to work together to improve law and order and eliminate drugs.

Recalling his own political experience, Rashed Khan said he had been nominated as the BNP candidate for the Jhenaidah-4 constituency but lost due to a rebel BNP candidate and internal factionalism. This, he said, also weakened the organisational strength of the local BNP. He urged those who had left the party to forget past mistakes and differences and return to work for the party.

He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had instructed him to strengthen the party organisationally.

The meeting was chaired by Kaliganj UNO Rezwana Nahid. Former senior joint convener of Kaliganj upazila BNP Hamidul Islam Hamid, former acting general secretary of Jahangirnagar University Chhatra Dal Hafizur Rahman and Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kabir Hossain also spoke at the meeting.

Managing Director of Mobarakganj Sugar Mills A.N.M. Zobayer, BNP leaders Tabibur Rahman Mini, Israel Hossain and Harun-ur-Rashid Mollah, as well as leaders and activists of Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal and other affiliated organisations, were present.
