Copyright complications dashes hopes for Kaiser 2

Despite a strong demand from fans, Director Tanim Noor’s popular web-series Kaiser won’t be getting a sequel due to, of all things, copyright reasons.

OTT Platform Hoichoi Bangladesh announced Kaiser: Level Two, to the delight of many fans. This was announced back in January 2023, three years later, and there hasn’t been any news on it since.

It wouldn’t be until the director of the series, Tamim Noor, revealed that the project won’t be moving forward, due to the OTT platform’s lack of interest. The director expressed regret that he couldn’t retain the IP (intellectual property) rights to the series. As such, he recently, while sharing his experience on working the series on social media, advised future filmmakers and creators to find ways to retain ownership of their stories and characters.

He explained that owning the rights gives creators greater control over their scripts, their character, and the creative freedom to do what they want with the IP. Owning the IP, he

added, would also provide them opportunities for royalties through OTT licensing, sequels, and remakes. “Keep the rights to the work with you and make your story or character a permanent asset,” he advised future creators, urging them to not make the same mistake he did. If he had the rights, Tanim Noor said that he wouldn’t just stop at Kaiser 2, he would be free to make Kaiser 3, and even a movie based in the series.

Released in 2022, Kaiser was a detective thriller that follows the eponymous gamer-detective Kaiser, played by Afran Nisho. The series was praised for its gripping plot, performances, and production quality. But for now, with Kaiser behind him, Tamim Noor is currently working on other projects, like directing the acclaimed films, Utsav and Bonolota Express.
