A court has sentenced Riku Begum, 60, to life imprisonment for the murder of five-year-old Sajjat Hossain in Fakirhat of Bagerhat. She was also fined Tk 10,000, and in default, she will serve an additional six months in prison.
Bagerhat Additional Sessions Judge-2 Court Judge Faizur Rahman announced the verdict on Monday. The accused was not present in court when the verdict was delivered. She has been absconding since being released on bail.
Convicted Rinku Begum is the wife of Md Babar Ali Sheikh of Mulghar village in Fakirhat upazila.
According to case documents and prosecution sources, five-year-old Sajjat Hossain, son of Masud Sheikh of Mulghar village, went missing on the afternoon of February 10, 2014. The following day, February 11, his body was recovered from among discarded water hyacinths near a fish enclosure owned by a local man named Shamim.
On February 12, Sajjat’s father, Masud Sheikh, filed a murder case with Fakirhat Police Station, naming Riku Begum as the sole accused. In the case, he alleged that Riku Begum had strangled his son to death.
Following the investigation, police submitted a charge sheet. After a lengthy judicial process involving the autopsy report, witness testimonies and other evidence, the court found Riku Begum guilty of the murder and handed down the sentence.
Md Altaf Hossain represented the prosecution, while Md Faisal Arifin represented the defence.
Prosecution lawyer Md Altaf Hossain said, “As the charge of murder was proven, the court sentenced the accused to life imprisonment and fined her Tk 10,000. She is absconding.”
