Six detained with seized cement and fertiliser

The Coast Guard has detained six alleged smugglers and seized a large quantity of cement and chemical fertiliser while they were being smuggled to Myanmar in Patenga, Chattogram.

The six were detained during an operation conducted from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM on Wednesday (August 26) in the area adjacent to Gate No. 15 in Patenga police station.

Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the matter on Thursday (August 27) morning.

Acting on a tip-off "Coast Guard Patenga Outpost members conducted a special operation, During the operation, they searched two suspicious cargo boats" he said.

The search led to the seizure of 1,000 sacks of cement and 280 sacks of chemical fertiliser, worth around Tk 15 lakh, which were being transported for smuggling to Myanmar. Six people were detained along with the two boats allegedly used in the smuggling operation.

Legal proceedings against the seized goods, boats and detained individuals are underway, the Coast Guard official said.

"Coast Guard operations to prevent smuggling would continue in the future'' He added.
