Mamata signals TMC return to power four months after election defeat

Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee has said her party will return to power in West Bengal “very soon,” just months after losing the state Assembly election to the BJP. She made the remarks at a foundation-day programme of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad in Kolkata on Friday.

“Do not worry. The BJP’s own people will answer the BJP. Very soon, the Trinamool Congress will return to power,” Banerjee said, signalling that the party intends to mount a political comeback against the BJP government.

The programme also highlighted an ongoing split within the TMC. The Mamata Banerjee-Abhishek Banerjee faction held its event on Cathedral Road, while the rival faction led by West Bengal Assembly Opposition Leader Ritabrata Banerjee organised a separate programme on Rani Rashmoni Avenue. The Calcutta High Court had allowed Ritabrata Banerjee to continue as Leader of the Opposition for the time being.

Mamata also accused the police of preventing the TMC from holding meetings and rallies. She said that if police permission was denied, the party would seek permission from the people and continue its programmes. Abhishek Banerjee, meanwhile, attacked dissidents who had left the TMC, saying they would not be welcomed back into the party.

The TMC leadership also criticised the BJP government and accused it of political repression. Mamata has separately alleged that the BJP manipulated the recent Assembly election process, while the party continues to challenge aspects of the election and voter-list revision process.
