A customer in Madarganj, Jamalpur, has received a Tk 692 electricity bill for August even though the meter had already been removed from his premises.
Nimai Chandra Sarker, a resident of Tegharia Bazar in Char Pakerdah union, received the bill on August 25, raising questions about the billing process of the rural electricity authority.
Nimai said he had five electricity meters at his house. He had applied to replace one residential meter with a commercial connection for a nearby temple.
The commercial meter was installed at the site of the previous residential meter. However, the meter became disconnected after a tree branch fell on it sometime in July. Rural electricity officials later removed the damaged meter.
Despite this, a Tk 692 bill for August was issued against the connection.
“I did not use the meter or consume any electricity. The meter was damaged and later taken away by the officials. So how did the bill come?” Nimai said.
Mokhlesur Rahman, in-charge of the Tegharia complaint centre, said the bill had been prepared after discussing the matter with Nimai but acknowledged that it was an error.
Syeda Farzana Yasmin, deputy general manager of the Madarganj zonal office of Jamalpur Palli Bidyut Samity, said the bill was generated against the previous residential meter at the same location.
She said an investigation team had been sent to look into the matter and action would be taken if any negligence or irregularity was found.
