An office assistant of Sirajdikhan Upazila Land Office has allegedly been working at Latabdi Union Land Office for nearly two years despite being posted to the upazila office.
Locals alleged that Ali Hossain regularly signs the attendance register at the upazila land office but performs his duties at Latabdi Union Land Office, where he assists the sub-assistant land officer (Naib).
During a visit to the office of the assistant commissioner (land) in Sirajdikhan, Ali Hossain’s regular signatures were found in the attendance register, but he was not present there. He was later found at the Latabdi Union Land Office.
Locals said Ali Hossain had previously worked in the area for a long time and has been serving at the union land office for nearly two years, despite his current posting as an office assistant at the upazila land office.
They called for an investigation into his posting, duty assignment and attendance records over the past two years.
Meanwhile, locals have also accused Ali Hossain of allegedly taking extra money for mutation-related services.
Local resident Mohammad Ali alleged that Ali Hossain had been working at land offices in the area for 10 to 11 years and had become well known to local residents. He alleged that people often approached Ali Hossain for mutation and other land-related services.
He further alleged that although there was no fixed fee for mutation services, Ali Hossain allegedly took as much as Tk 8,000 from some people and Tk 10,000 from others.
Contacted by phone, Ali Hossain said he was busy and would speak about the allegations later. However, he did not answer several subsequent calls.
Sirajdikhan Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rumpa Ghosh said she was not previously aware of the matter and learned about it from the reporter.
She said she would look into the posting issue with the office of the assistant commissioner (land). If the allegation of taking extra money for mutation services is found to be true, action will be taken according to the rules.
