Government to buy LNG at up to $29.795 per MMBtu

The government has approved the purchase of LNG at up to $29.795 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), further increasing the cost of imported gas.

The approval was given at the 44th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase for 2026, held online on Sunday with Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair.

The committee recommended purchasing six LNG cargoes for delivery in October. Two cargoes will be procured through international quotations and four through direct procurement.

For the 52nd cargo, scheduled for October 9-10, the committee recommended UK-based TotalEnergies Gas and Power Ltd at $28.95 per MMBtu.

For the 56th cargo, scheduled for October 27-28, it recommended Singapore-based Vital Asia Pte Ltd at $29.795 per MMBtu.

The committee also recommended purchasing two cargoes from US-based Darab Inc through direct procurement at $17 per MMBtu and another two from Mind Mingle LLC at $19 per MMBtu.

The latest approved price is higher than the $28.03 per MMBtu approved on September 2. The government had approved LNG purchases at $24.63 per MMBtu on August 24 and $23.93 per MMBtu a week earlier.

In December last year, the government purchased LNG for less than $10.50 per MMBtu, meaning the price has nearly tripled within several months.
