Chief prosecutor says cocktail blast not being taken seriously

Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said the cocktail explosion outside the Supreme Court is not being taken seriously, stressing that tight security remains in place around the International Crimes Tribunal.

He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at his office on Wednesday.

A cocktail exploded outside the main entrance of the Supreme Court at around 1 PM on Tuesday, following the announcement of the International Crimes Tribunal's verdict in a crimes against humanity case related to the July uprising.

The tribunal sentenced seven accused, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, to death.

The other condemned convicts are Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former state minister for information and broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, banned Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan.

The chief prosecutor said strict security measures are always maintained both inside and outside the tribunal, with security personnel in uniform and plain clothes.

“You may see security personnel in uniform today, but there is also security in plain clothes, which may not be visible,” he said.

“Strict security is always maintained inside and outside the tribunal. It was there before and remains in place. As for the cocktail explosion, we are not taking it seriously.”
