A 24-kilometre embankment and road will be built at an estimated cost of Tk 385 crore to protect Bhairab town and surrounding areas from erosion along the Meghna River.

State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam disclosed the plan on Friday after inspecting the Meghna River at Kalipur in Bhairab around noon.

He said several unions of Bhairab upazila, including the town, are being affected by erosion along the Meghna.

He said a project has been taken up, in line with an election pledge and based on public demand, to construct the embankment and road from the ferry ghat to Mendipur. The initial estimated cost of the project is around Tk 385 crore. Its scope will be expanded in phases, he added.

The state minister said bridges would be built at necessary points to keep the flow of water through small canals and wetlands connected to the Meghna normal.

He said the measures would ensure that construction of the embankment and road does not disrupt the natural flow of river water.

The government is implementing various projects to ensure overall development and improve communication infrastructure in the area, he added.

Earlier in the morning, the state minister distributed sports and training equipment to Bhairab Football Academy at the temporary office of Bhairab upazila BNP at Kamalpur Dak Bungalow.

Later, he inaugurated sanitation, road and drainage improvement works in the low-income Harijan community at Chandani Tila in Bhairab Bazar under the Urban Management and Infrastructure Improvement Project of the Local Government Division.

In the afternoon, sports equipment was distributed among educational institutions, players and sports organisers at the upazila auditorium with funding from the Upazila Parishad and the MP's fund.

Executive Engineer of Kishoreganj Water Development Board Munsi Amir Faisal, Bhairab Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) KM Mamunur Rashid, Upazila BNP President Md Rafiqul Islam, General Secretary Md Ariful Islam, Municipal BNP President Haji Md Shahin, General Secretary Mujibur Rahman, Organising Secretary Saiful Haque and Bhairab Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Zahidul Haque Javed, among others, were present.
