Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said Bangladesh’s foundation will become stronger if children are given adequate opportunities to develop their talents and abilities.

Just as the strength of a family depends on the proper upbringing of its children, the country’s future also depends on ensuring children’s healthy and well-rounded development, he said.

The prime minister made the remarks on Tuesday at an event marking Children’s Rights Day 2026 and the 50th anniversary of the Bangladesh Shishu Academy.

Addressing the children at the beginning of the programme, Tarique Rahman said the event was primarily about them and that listening to children, rather than speeches by adults, should be its main focus.

Recalling his own childhood, he said he had also visited the Shishu Academy as a child when its activities first began.

“Just as you are here today as children, I too once came to this Shishu Academy. I came here as a child, as a young guest.''

The prime minister also recalled that stories written by him and his younger brother had been published in the Shishu Academy’s children’s magazine, Shishu. Seeing one of his own stories and his brother’s writing displayed at the event brought back memories of his childhood, he said.

Tarique urged parents and authorities not to limit children’s development to academic studies, calling for greater opportunities for sports, arts, culture and music.

Referring to children’s diverse talents, he said some are good at drawing, while others enjoy reciting poetry, singing, dancing or playing musical instruments.

“Every child has some kind of talent. What they need is the right opportunity to develop that talent,” he said.
