Argentina remained in top form throughout the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, except for the final. After comfortably progressing from the group stage, they produced several remarkable comebacks in the knockout rounds.
Lionel Messi played a key role in almost every match. From the group stage to the final, he scored eight goals and provided four assists in eight games. He also scored his first World Cup hat-trick.
Despite his impressive performance, Messi did not win any individual or team award. France’s Kylian Mbappe won the Golden Boot with 10 goals, while Spain captain Rodri won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
However, Spain’s World Cup-winning star Lamine Yamal considers Messi the best player of the tournament.
“Everyone knows he is the greatest in history, but perhaps no one expected such a legendary performance from him. Argentina had many good players, but Messi stood above everyone. For me, he was the best player at the World Cup,” Yamal said.
