No Trump-Tarique meeting: Humayun Kabir

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir has said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not hold a separate bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump during his ongoing visit to New York.

Responding to reporters’ questions about whether the two leaders could meet during the UN General Assembly, Kabir said the current visit was primarily multilateral in nature and focused on UN activities.

“This is not a bilateral visit; it is a multilateral visit. The main objective is to attend the UN General Assembly.'' 

The state minister said any bilateral discussions with the United States would be pursued at an appropriate time and through a separate bilateral visit.

“You already know that Donald Trump has written to the prime minister and expressed interest in a meeting. However, that would be a bilateral meeting.''

He added that the matter would be considered later, at a suitable time and based on the convenience of both sides.
