A total of 1,600 doctors in 40 districts are being given special training to prevent deaths of dengue patients caused by medical errors or mismanagement.

The day-long training programme, conducted by specialist physicians and professors from the Bangladesh Society of Medicine, has begun across the country.

Health State Minister Dr MA Muhit inaugurated the programme as the chief guest at an event titled “Training of Doctors on Clinical Management of Dengue” at Dhaka Medical College on Tuesday morning.

Speaking at the event, the state minister said the science-based training programme has been organised to ensure that no dengue patient dies due to lack of treatment or mismanagement. He said improving doctors’ skills in line with standard clinical management of dengue could help reduce the death rate and save many lives.

Highlighting the health sector’s achievements and doctors’ efforts, he said 63,627 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals so far this dengue season. Despite limited facilities and heavy patient pressure, 59,083 patients have recovered and returned home through the efforts of doctors. Around 4,300 patients are currently undergoing treatment.

He said nearly 99 percent of those infected are recovering and returning to their families.

Dr MA Muhit said an effective healthcare system cannot be built solely on emotions or unplanned decisions. Instead of unplanned infrastructure development or sudden announcements in the past, the government is now taking coordinated steps to address crises by collecting epidemiological data, developing science-based plans and training doctors.

Emphasising the professional dignity and social security of doctors, he said blanket media trials against healthcare workers were unacceptable. There should be no distance between service providers and the public, he added, stressing that the desired reforms in the healthcare system must move forward while ensuring proper respect for doctors.

Principals of various medical colleges, civil surgeons and representatives of doctors from grassroots-level facilities to specialised hospitals joined the event both in person and virtually.

It was learnt that around 350 senior doctors were given a “Training of Trainers” programme by the Bangladesh Society of Medicine before the main training began. These trained doctors are now providing training to 1,600 doctors simultaneously in 40 districts.
