Nine kazakh troops killed during naval exercise

At least nine Kazakh soldiers have died after being swept away by strong currents during a naval military exercise in the Caspian Sea, the Kazakh government confirmed on Thursday (September 24).
According to a statement from Kazakhstan’s Defence Ministry, the accident occurred during a wartime training mission in the southwestern Mangystau region.
The soldiers were caught in the incident amid a sudden deterioration in weather conditions and strong winds, the ministry said.
“According to preliminary information, 19 servicemen were swept out to sea,” the statement said. Three of them were rescued alive, while search and rescue operations for the others were continuing.
A special team led by Defence Minister Dauren Kosanov was sent to the accident site to coordinate the rescue operation and investigate the cause of the incident.
The ministry said further details on the progress of the rescue operation and the condition of the servicemen would be released after verification.
