Anthrax spreads as Sundarganj becomes hotspot

Anthrax infections are spreading in parts of the northern region, with Gaibandha’s Sundarganj becoming as a hotspot as 37 people have received treatment for symptoms of the disease at the upazila health complex.

Of them, 19 are women, 14 men and four children, according to health officials. At least 53 people in Rangpur, Dinajpur and Gaibandha have received treatment for anthrax symptoms over the past month, while 16 people in Rangpur and Dinajpur were diagnosed with the disease and later recovered.

The recent outbreak in Sundarganj was linked to the slaughtering and distribution of meat from a sick cow. The meat was reportedly distributed among around 100 families in Bachhati village of Sabarnanda Union on September 9. Health authorities have since stepped up surveillance and advised people against slaughtering or consuming meat from sick animals.
