Two bodies recovered after drowning in Mahananda

Two young men drowned while bathing in the Mahananda River in Chapainawabganj on Sunday afternoon. Local residents later recovered their bodies from the river.

The incident occurred around 1:45 PM near the Diar Dhainagar area of Gobratala Union in Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila.

The deceased were identified as Sujon, 18, son of Abdur Rahim of Mahipur Bhatopara area under Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station, and Sabbir Ahmed, 19, son of Subahan, from the same area.

According to local residents, Sujon and Sabbir had gone to the Mahananda River with several others to bathe at the Diar Dhainagar ghat. At one point, they were swept away by the river current and submerged.

After noticing that the two had gone missing, their companions raised the alarm. Local residents rushed to the spot and managed to retrieve both young men from the river. However, they had already died by then.

Ekaramul Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed the deaths.

He said, "two people had drowned in the river in Gobratala Union. The matter had been reported to the river police, who were handling the incident and would take necessary legal action."
