Cox’s Bazar airport set for international flights

Cox’s Bazar airport is set to begin trial operations of its new international passenger terminal on Monday (September 28), paving the way for international flights from October.

The airport has been upgraded with a 10,700-foot runway, the longest in Bangladesh, including around 1,700 feet built over the sea using specialised technology. The extended runway is designed to facilitate operations of wide-body international passenger aircraft.

The newly developed 17,955-square-metre international passenger terminal has an annual handling capacity of around 2 million passengers. It is equipped with seven advanced security scanners and metal detectors, 14 check-in counters, 10 immigration desks, two large baggage claim belts, four escalators, six high-speed lifts and modern boarding bridges.

The runway has also been equipped for Category-II operations, with airfield night lighting to support flights during nighttime and adverse weather conditions.

Project Coordinator M Mosharraf Hossain said all asphalt overlay and lighting-related work on the runway had been completed, adding that the new international runway and terminal were fully ready.

Substation Engineer of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) Md Sohel Rana said testing and commissioning of the equipment had been completed, with the facility prepared to provide uninterrupted services to around 2 million international and domestic passengers annually.

Local business leaders said the airport’s international operation could open new opportunities for tourism and direct exports of Cox’s Bazar’s dried fish, vegetables and agricultural products to the Middle East and other international markets.

Airport authorities said they are ready to handle international flights, with the required manpower and facilities in place. The airport is expected to begin full-fledged international flight operations in October.
