World Older Persons Day is being observed today, October 1, in Bangladesh and around the world with various programmes. This year’s theme is “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives.”
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages marking the day.
The president called for rethinking healthcare, social security, housing and employment systems for older people as life expectancy continues to rise. He said ensuring a safe and dignified old age should be a priority for everyone.
He noted that the government has allocated Tk 5,239 crore for old-age allowances in the 2026-27 fiscal year and increased both the number of beneficiaries and the allowance amount.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said the government has taken various initiatives to ensure social security, financial protection, healthcare and dignified lives for older citizens. These include expanding old-age allowances, providing financial support through the “Family Card,” expanding primary healthcare and strengthening the social safety net.
Both leaders highlighted the contributions and experience of older people and urged families, communities, private organisations and the government to play a greater role in ensuring their welfare, dignity and social participation.
The United Nations decided in 1990 to observe October 1 as International Day of Older Persons. The day has been observed since 1991 to promote awareness of ageing and protect the rights and well-being of older people.
