Kevin De Bruyne rolled back the years with a stunning brace as Belgium cruised to a 3-0 victory over Turkey on Friday, strengthening their position in the Nations League title race.
The 35-year-old midfielder was at the heart of Belgium’s dominance from the opening whistle at the Maurice Dufrasne Stadium in Liège, dictating the tempo and repeatedly creating openings for the hosts.
De Bruyne opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a composed low finish into the bottom-left corner after cutting past a defender on the edge of the box.
Turkey struggled to respond despite having attacking talents such as Arda Güler and Barış Alper Yılmaz in the lineup. Belgium’s disciplined defence kept the visitors from turning possession into meaningful chances.
De Bruyne doubled Belgium’s advantage in the 60th minute with a superb long-range strike. The goal also marked a career milestone, taking his combined club and international tally to 201 goals.
It was his 40th goal for Belgium. Now playing for Italian side Napoli, De Bruyne continues to make his influence felt at both club and international level.
Romelu Lukaku completed the rout in the 75th minute, converting a cross from the right after coming off the bench to put Belgium 3-0 ahead.
There was no late comeback from Turkey as Belgium comfortably saw out the victory.
The defeat was Turkey’s third straight loss, leaving them without a point and facing an increasingly difficult battle to remain in the top tier of the Nations League.
Belgium moved to six points and sit second in Group A, behind leaders France on seven. Italy have four points, leaving the group finely poised after three rounds.
