Bangladesh missed out on a bronze medal at the Asian Games after suffering a 63-run defeat to Sri Lanka in the third-place playoff on Saturday.
Chasing Sri Lanka’s target of 166 at Nishin in Japan, Bangladesh were bowled out for just 102 runs.
Bangladesh made a disastrous start as none of their first three batters could open their accounts. Saif Hassan, Tanzid Hasan Tamim and captain Litton Das were all dismissed for ducks, leaving Bangladesh at 4 for 3.
The team failed to recover from the early collapse. Nasum Ahmed top-scored for Bangladesh with 26 runs, while Parvez Hossain Emon made 22 and Yasir Ali scored 21. Towhid Hridoy and Rishad Hossain contributed 11 and 10 runs respectively.
For Sri Lanka, Nuwan Thushara, Tharindu Rathnayake, Wanindu Hasaranga and Vijayakanth Viyaskanth claimed two wickets each. Arshage and Dushan Hemantha took one wicket apiece.
Earlier, Sri Lanka posted 165 for nine after opting to bat first. Bangladesh’s bowlers reduced Sri Lanka to 54 for five before Tharindu Rathnayake and captain Sahan Arachchige revived the innings with a 93-run partnership.
Rathnayake smashed 65 off 32 balls, hitting seven fours and five sixes, while Arachchige scored 33.
Mahedi Hasan, Saif Hassan and Mustafizur Rahman took two wickets each for Bangladesh, with Aliss Al Islam and Rishad Hossain claiming one apiece.
Sri Lanka’s victory denied Bangladesh a medal as the team exited the Asian Games empty-handed.
