Global life expectancy rose to 73.3 years in 2023, nearly returning to the pre-pandemic level, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The WHO’s latest Global Health Estimates, based on mortality and disability data from 2000 to 2023, found that global life expectancy was 73.4 years in 2019, meaning the 2023 figure was just 0.1 years lower than before the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the recovery in 'healthy life expectancy' has been slower. People worldwide lived an average of 62.8 years in good health in 2023, 0.4 years below the 2019 figure.
The estimates were compiled using national birth and death records, WHO data and information from UN agencies. WHO official Dr Alain Labrique said the challenge now is to ensure that the additional years of life are spent in good health while health systems adapt to changing population needs.
