The number of dengue patients is increasing in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur, with children as well as young and older adults among those affected.

According to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex, patients with fever are visiting the hospital almost every day for dengue tests.

The number of dengue-positive patients has increased over the past two months. A total of 114 dengue patients received treatment at the health complex in August and September, most of whom recovered and returned home. Some were transferred elsewhere for advanced treatment. No deaths have been reported.

As of Friday, 11 dengue patients were admitted to the hospital, including children, young people and older men and women. Many other patients are also receiving treatment at home, according to local sources.

The health complex has also been treating a significant number of measles patients. In September, 30 measles patients were admitted, while 136 patients have received treatment for measles at the facility during the current season. Five measles patients are currently admitted.

A patient’s relative, Aklema Begum, said the patient was admitted after a dengue test came back positive following a fever. She said the patient had been undergoing treatment for four days and was still very weak.

Another patient’s relative, Zulekha, said the patient had been admitted for five days and was recovering, with the platelet count increasing.

Many children and older people suffering from seasonal fever have also been visiting the hospital’s emergency department in recent days. Relatives said patients often became severely weak after developing fever.

Shibchar Upazila Health Complex Resident Medical Officer Dr Md Ibrahim Mia said dengue cases had increased over the past two months and might rise further this month before declining.

“We are trying to provide patients with the best possible treatment with the resources available to us,” he said.

He added that the number of children suffering from measles was also significant, but most patients were recovering and returning home after treatment.
