Following three decades of demands and student demonstrations, two intercity trains—the Titumir Express and Sagardari Express—are scheduled to begin stoppages at Rajshahi University (RU) railway station from Saturday (Ocober 24).
The announcement was confirmed through a press release issued by the university's public relations office on Friday night, citing an official order signed by the Additional Chief Operating Superintendent of Bangladesh Railway (West).
Under the new schedule, train no. 734 (Titumir Express) and train no. 761 (Sagardari Express) will make official halts at the university station.
Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU) General Secretary Salahuddin Ammar welcomed the decision in a social media statement, thanking students and activists who campaigned for the cause over the years.
Ammar also noted that discussions were held with university authorities to introduce dedicated shuttle bus services for students catching night trains that do not halt at the university station, adding that the administration responded positively to the proposal. He further urged students to maintain order to ensure the continuation of the newly granted rail services.
The Rajshahi University railway station had remained functionally inactive for over thirty years, forcing students to commute to the main Rajshahi station and raising security concerns for night travel.
