Speaker of the Bangladesh Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed held a courtesy meeting with Singapore's non-resident High Commissioner to Bangladesh Derek Loh at the Speaker's office at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Monday.
During the meeting, the speaker described relations between Bangladesh and Singapore as warm and friendly, noting that Singapore is one of Bangladesh's important economic partners.
He also praised Singapore's development under the visionary leadership of Lee Kuan Yew, saying the country had become one of the world's prosperous nations.
Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said the July mass uprising of 2024 had ended authoritarian rule and renewed the country's democratic journey. He described the 13th parliamentary election as one of the freest, most acceptable and fairest elections in Bangladesh's history.
He further said the country's economic progress had been hampered during the previous 17 years of authoritarian rule and noted that Singapore could play an important role in Bangladesh's investment process.
Derek Loh stressed the need to prioritise technical education in Bangladesh's educational institutions. He said improving and expanding technical education alongside university education could help create employment opportunities for the country's young workforce.
The high commissioner also highlighted Singapore's economic development through shipbuilding and the construction of various types of vessels. He said Bangladesh could benefit economically from expanding its shipbuilding industry and establishing dry docks.
The two sides also exchanged views on investment and trade, expansion of the ready-made garment industry, reciprocal parliamentary visits, the activities of the Constitution Amendment Committee, improvement of educational standards, and public and government job recruitment examinations.
The speaker invited Singaporean companies to explore and extract oil and gas in Bangladesh's coastal areas, including Bhola.
Representatives of the Singapore Embassy, the secretary of the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat and other senior officials concerned were present at the meeting.
