BRAHMANBARIA, Jan 20: BNP has nominated Mushfiqur Rahman as its final candidate for Brahmanbaria-4 (Kasba and Akhaura) in the upcoming 13th parliamentary election. The party has formally sent a letter to the returning officer seeking allocation of its electoral symbol in his favour.

The letter, signed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, was issued on Sunday.

Mushfiqur Rahman, a former lawmaker from Brahmanbaria-4 and adviser to late BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, enjoys strong popularity in the constituency, party leaders claim.

BNP initially nominated Mushfiqur Rahman for the seat, while also naming District BNP Member Kabir Ahmed Bhuiyan as an alternative candidate. On January 3, the returning officer declared both nominations valid after scrutiny.

Later, Gono Odhikar Parishad candidate Zahirul Haque Chowdhury appealed to the Election Commission, alleging dual citizenship against Mushfiqur Rahman. However, Rahman had already renounced his Canadian citizenship before filing nomination papers, according to his affidavit. Following Sunday's hearing, the commission rejected the appeal and upheld the validity of his candidacy.

Abul Monsur Mission, Organising Secretary of Brahmanbaria District BNP, said the party has confirmed Mushfiqur Rahman as its final candidate and requested symbol allocation accordingly. He expressed confidence that Rahman would secure victory by a wide margin.

News of the decision sparked celebrations in Kasba and Akhaura on Sunday afternoon, where supporters staged processions, chanted slogans, and distributed sweets in front of the railway junction stations.
