The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast that one to two severe heatwaves may hit the country in the running month, alongside several spells of mild to moderate heatwaves.

The ongoing heatwave is expected to persist in different parts of the country on Saturday, officials said.

The temperature in Chuadanga has climbed to nearly 40 degrees Celsius at the start of April.

However, rainfall has already been recorded in some areas, including Shariatpur and there is a possibility of rain in areas adjacent to the capital, Dhaka.

The Met office said thunderstorms and rainfall is likely to increase from Sunday, which may bring temporary relief by lowering temperatures.

Despite the expected rain, authorities warn that heatwave conditions could continue intermittently throughout the month.
