Ex-BCL general secretary Ajoy Kar Khokon shown arrested in July Uprising murder case

A Dhaka court on Monday showed former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) general secretary Ajoy Kar Khokon, a leader of the banned Awami League, arrested in a murder case over the killing of Md. Nazmul Mia during the July 2024 anti-government protests.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Jamshed Alam passed the order after hearing a police application, prosecution officials said.

Police sought the order, saying witness statements and preliminary evidence linked Khokon to the Aug. 4, 2024 killing. The defence opposed the plea, arguing that a High Court order barred his arrest in additional cases. After hearing both sides, the court allowed the application.

According to the case statement, armed Awami League leaders and activists, along with members of its affiliated organisations, allegedly attacked protesters in Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur and Lalmatia on Aug. 4, 2024. Attackers allegedly hurled crude bombs and opened indiscriminate fire near Dhanmondi Hawkers Market, where Nazmul Mia was fatally shot. He was declared dead after being taken to a nearby hospital.

The murder case was filed with Mohammadpur Police Station by a colleague of the victim against named suspects and 400-500 unidentified individuals.

Khokon was arrested from Dhaka's Gulshan area on Sept. 23, 2025, in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act and has remained in jail since then.
