The government has taken new initiatives to resolve long-standing ferry and water transport challenges at Hatia, an island upazila of Noakhali district, with plans to introduce a new ferry service before Eid-ul-Azha.

State Minister for Shipping Rajib Ahsan made the announcement on Saturday while visiting the Nolchira Chowghat area in the upazila to assess the situation on the ground.

He said the government is committed to making travel easier and safer for people living in island regions. Based on field-level observations, necessary decisions are being taken to improve the existing transport system.

He added that the visit was conducted in the interest of all residents, regardless of political affiliation, with the aim of ensuring inclusive development.

During the visit, the minister noted that the government is working continuously to ensure safe travel for citizens across the country.

As part of this effort, authorities are planning to widen ferry terminals on both sides of Hatia. Regular dredging operations are also being carried out to maintain navigability in the river routes.

He further said that steps are being taken to improve ferry ramp infrastructure and ensure long-term riverbank protection in coordination with Water Development Board. These measures are expected to make ferry operations safer and more sustainable.

The state minister also mentioned that the ministry has additional long-term plans to further develop the water transport system in the region.

Among others present during the visit were BIWTA Chairman Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mostafa and Shipping Ministry Secretary Dr Nurunnahar Chowdhury.
