SONARGAON, NARAYANGANJ, May 2: Two people were killed when a pineapple-laden pickup van overturned on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in the Tipurdi area of Sonargaon Upazila of the district early Saturday.
The deceased were van driver Mohammad Ali, 35, son of late Sekandar Ali Majhi of Barishal District, and businessman Md Monir Khalifa, 28, son of Abdul Khalek Khalifa of Manikchhari Upazila in Khagrachhari District.
According to police and local sources, when the Dhaka-bound pickup van from Chattogram was passing through the Tipurdi area, an unknown car in front suddenly braked, causing the van to lose control and hit the car's rear.
As a result, the van overturned and the two were seriously injured. Upon receiving the news, fire service personnel rescued the injured and took them to the Sonargaon Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the two dead.
Officer-in-Charge of Kanchpur Highway Police Station Md Shamim Sheikh said that the pickup van has been seized. The bodies have been sent to the district hospital for autopsies.
