A Jamalpur court has sentenced three individuals to death for the gang-rape of a 16-year-old girl at Islampur upazila of the district.

Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict on Thursday while acquitting one other accused in the case.

The convicts are Shipon, 21, Ibrahim, 27, and Yusuf Ali, 22, all from Shildah area of Belgachha union. In addition to the death penalty, the court imposed a fine of Tk 2 lakh on each of the convicts.

According to the prosecution, the victim had a romantic relationship with a local youth named Sadiq. On the night of April 19, 2024, Sadiq met the girl in a field near her house.

While they were together, Shipon, Ibrahim and Yusuf confronted them. Sadiq managed to flee the scene, after which the three men threatened to expose the girl to the community before taking turns raping her.

The victim's father filed a case with Islampur Police Station on May 5, 2024, naming four individuals. After hearing the testimonies of nine witnesses, the court reached its decision.

Special Public Prosecutor, Advocate Md. Fazlul Haque expressed satisfaction with the verdict and noted that the fourth accused, Sadiq, was acquitted because the victim testified in court that her initial encounter with him was consensual.

While Sadiq was cleared of charges, the court found the other three guilty of the subsequent gang-rape, he added.
