Dhaka records world’s 2nd worst air quality on Sunday

Dhaka ranked as the world’s second most polluted city on Sunday morning, recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 163 at 9:45 AM, according to IQAir.

An AQI score above 150 is classified as “unhealthy,” meaning the air pollution level may pose serious health risks, especially for children, older adults and people suffering from respiratory illnesses.

Pakistan’s Lahore topped the global pollution list with an AQI score of 195, while India’s Delhi ranked third with a score of 156.

High AQI levels are generally linked to increased concentrations of fine particulate matter, particularly PM2.5, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and trigger various health complications.

Air pollution in Dhaka typically worsens during the dry season due to construction dust, vehicle emissions, industrial activities and limited rainfall.

Health experts have advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, wear protective masks when outside and keep windows closed to reduce exposure to polluted air.

The AQI is a daily measurement system used worldwide to assess air quality and its possible effects on public health.
