At least 15 to 20 individuals were injured in a clash between two groups of worshippers over mosque committee formation and control of an Eidgah ground in Sirajganj’s Raigonj upazila on Friday.

This incident forced the suspension of Jumma prayers at the mosque.

The incident took place around noon at Kabaripara Shahi Jame Mosque area under Chandaikona union.

Among the injured were identified as Shahidul Islam, a resident of Uttarpara mohalla and Robiul Islam, a resident of Dakshinpara mohalla of the same village. Identities of the other injured could not be known immediately.

According to police and local sources, a long-standing dispute had been continuing between the Uttarpara and Dakshinpara neighbourhoods of Kabaripara village over the formation of the mosque committee and control of the Eidgah field.

An altercation broke out between worshippers of the two groups before the Jumma prayer began. At one stage, the two sides engaged in a clash using sticks and locally made arms.

Police later rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.

Later, locals rescued the injured and admitted them to Raiganj Upazila Health Complex and different hospitals.

Sources said the Jumma prayer could not be held at the mosque following the clash among the worshippers.

Raigonj Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Ahsanuzzaman confirmed the incident.

He said additional police had been deployed in the area to avoid further violence, adding that no formal complaint had been filed so far.
