A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake occurred at 1:05pm local time (10:05am Bangladesh time). The USGS said its epicentre was at a depth of 10 kilometres, about 136 kilometres northeast of Hirara on Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

A tsunami alert was issued following the earthquake but was later withdrawn.

Japan lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically active regions, and experiences frequent earthquakes.
