A cargo vessel carrying 5,000 sacks of paddy and rice capsized in the strong current at the confluence of the Padma and Meghna rivers in Chandpur's Puranbazar area on Wednesday morning.
The vessel, carrying 3,500 sacks of rice and 1,500 sacks of paddy from Pabna, overturned after being caught in a whirlpool near Puranbazar Ghat, said its operator, Ershad Majhi. All five to six workers on board swam safely to shore.
The capsized vessel was later towed to the bank of the Dakatia River.
Nazmul Islam, general secretary of the Chandpur Rice Traders Association, said the cargo belonged to 10 to 12 traders in Puranbazar, who incurred an estimated loss of around Tk 1 crore.
Local residents said water levels in the Padma and Meghna rivers had remained high for the past several days amid intermittent rainfall. Naval police and local administration officials visited the site after the incident.
