The US Embassy in Dhaka has explained its decision to suspend immigrant visa processing for Bangladeshi nationals, saying the move is linked to a review of US visa screening policies and concerns over the use of public welfare benefits.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the embassy said the US government has a responsibility to taxpayers to ensure that immigrants do not unlawfully access public assistance programmes or become dependent on government welfare.
According to the embassy, the suspension, effective from January 21 this year, is intended to allow a comprehensive review of visa screening policies and procedures to ensure they prioritise the interests of US citizens.
The embassy clarified that the measure applies only to immigrant visas. Non-immigrant visas, including tourist, student and other temporary visas, are not affected by the decision.
